Author Guidelines

General Guidelines for Journal of Surrealism and the Americas Submissions

Feature articles should be from 6,000 to 8,000 words and double-spaced (excluding endnotes). The JSA accepts and publishes submissions in several languages other than English (German, Spanish, and French). When submitting an essay in a language other than English, authors must also submit a 500 word English-language abstract of their submission. English-language feature article submissions must also include a short 250-300 word abstract and a brief biography (300 word maximum, placed before the endnotes). Reviews are from 1,500-2,000 words and should also include a short biography. Reviews must be in English language.

All essays must conform to the Chicago Manual of Style format and use endnote citation (no additional bibliography or works cited lists, please). A short guide to the CMS can be found at: http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html

DO NOT insert any images in your manuscript document. Please check the JSA image guidelines below for further instructions on how to submit images with your feature article submission.

In addition, please adhere to JSA style:

  • ”Surrealism” is capitalized only when it is used as a noun and is otherwise lower-case
    • Titles of artworks are italicized
    • Titles of exhibitions are in quotation marks
  • Only one space between sentences
  • Use American conventions for quotations and quotation marks: NO British or French/Spanish conventions
  • No spaces between paragraphs
    • Use American spelling and punctuation throughout
  • Eliminate parenthetical remarks wherever possible
  • Use the long dash (em dash) and not two hyphens

The JSA editors will invite you to submit your finalized feature essay or review manuscript.

General Guidelines for Images for JSA Feature Articles
The JSA accepts up to six (6) images to run in feature articles. DO NOT insert images in your manuscript document; the editor will ask you to remove them from any Word document. You must however indicate clearly where in your article the images are to appear.

For essays that have been accepted for publication, please prepare images as jpeg files, sending each as a clearly labeled jpeg file. We can only accept images for which you have already secured permission for it to appear in the JSA and on the JSA website. Each image must be at least 300 dpi. Please be sure to label each image by author name and figure # so that the layout editor can insert the images properly. You will be asked to transfer/share them with the editors via file sharing.

Please prepare and submit a separate List of Illustrations for your essay (please place this in the shared Google folder as well). Each caption should have a format similar to the sample caption below; however, different agencies stipulate a specific format for permissions, so you need to keep to the wording that they have stipulated. Authors are responsible to clear or obtain permissions for their own images.

You will also need to be clear about where the images should be inserted in your text with: PLACE FIG. 1 HERE.
